The current speeds available from Broadband providers for
non-new build housing in Southport is lower than that in most
housing across the north west. Speaking with colleagues/ friends
and family in the area its been a particular pain point for all of
us. Fibre to the cabinet appears to be the standard option across
the borough yet given the outdated infrastructure the promised
speeds are often far from the truth. There had been previous
notifications of planned Fibre to the premises for 55 thousand
households in Southport by Netomnia (https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2021/05/netomnia-quietly-reveal-new-uk-fttp-broadband-rollout-areas.html)
however it appears to have been cancelled multiple times.
Having moved from a very rural area previously that had near double the speeds and reliability I find it odd that implementation hasn't been sooner.
Given the continuous improvements Sefton council is working towards in the area with regards to attracting interest for young families I have personally been told by younger families that they wouldn't consider the area due to slow speeds and poor accessibility.
In addition as many people are now working from home
pre-pandemic there has already been visible strain on the current
outdated services.
